The Algarve, a region located in the south of Portugal, is often described as the golden coast of Europe. This is primarily due to the breathtaking cliffs which stand proudly in a golden colour on the sandy beaches bordering the azure ocean. The Algarve welcomes just over 4 million tourists every year who are taken back by its incomparable charm, its picturesque fishing villages, its gastronomy, its culture… and much more. Being at the edge of Europe, the Algarve benefits from a pleasant all year round which still varies between seasons. Autumn

Autumn in the Algarve can also be called an indian summer. This time of the year is an ideal time to discover what the region has to offer as it is more tranquil; there are less tourists and less noise which means one can connect more with nature. The weather can be unpredictable as it can in any country, but generally, September and October welcomes temperatures in the mid to high 20s, November is when it begins to cool down and in December it is safe to say winter Autumn is here. Despite the warm temperatures of the early Autumn months, it is important to note that the sea is not as warm as other southern European countries as it is the Atlantic Ocean which is not as warm as the Mediterranean Sea. The real highlight of visiting the Algarve in the Autumn months in that there is the possibility of taking part in outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling without being too hot or surrounded by too many people. Furthermore, it is the utopian months and location for a golf holiday. The charming town of Vilamoura annually hosts the Portugese Masters Golf Tournament which attracts a multitude of renowned golfers wanting to increase their status.

Winter

Winter in the Algarve is much more bearable than winter in northern European countries. With an average temperature of 13 degrees, sunbathing is not an option but with sunny days almost guaranteed, sightseeing, hiking, cycling and horse riding are activities to take part in the winter months. However south of Europe it is, it is still winter and it can get cold, especially at night.  All of the popular towns of the Algarve such as Tavira, Lagos or Albufeira are as charming in the winter as they are in other seasons, perhaps maybe even more then as there are a lot less tourists. In the Christmas and New Year season, the Algarve welcomes a large number of tourists who wish to escape from the cold and rain and celebrate these joyful festivities with their loved ones and friends.

Spring

Spring

The Spring months in the Algarve have been said to be the most optimal to make the most of this glorious region. With temperatures ranging from 18 to 26 degrees, the Spring is ideal for those who would like to discover the Algarve before it is invaded by mass tourism. Similarly to Autumn, the Spring is the time to practice all sorts of outdoor activities which may not be bearable in the summer due to the heat. Leaving the rainy months behind, the landscape in the Algarve is more beautiful than ever with the greenest grass and gorgeous flowers blooming everywhere. Spring is the time for two emblems of Portugal to come out of hibernation, almond and orange trees. When blooming, these radiate a scent that will awaken all your senses. Furthermore, Spring in the Algarve is a great season for all kinds of levels of surfing; for the beginners, there are great surfing schools. Another perk of visiting the Algarve at this time is that it is considerably more affordable than in the summer because tourist-centered business only just begin to come out of hibernation.

Summer

Summer

The summer is the busiest season for the Algarve. From June to August the streets of the picturesque villages are packed with locals and tourists who want to make the most of what the region has to offer. The beaches of the Algarve are all more beautiful than the other and are the perfect spot for a convivial picnic with friends. For those who enjoy exploring, the Algarve hides many coves which are definitely worth discovering! If you are not a fan of the beach, do not worry there are other activities to take part in.
