Sports and activities to do in the Algarve for an invigorating stay

Algarve is all about seafood, endless beaches and spectacular views. All of this calls us to relax and stay still during the day, while enjoying the sunshine. Fortunately for travellers who enjoy sporting activities, the Algarve offers many ways to exercise while enjoying the climate and the landscape. Villanovo has selected some sports activities to do in the Algarve if you wish to alternate days by your private swimming pool with some thrill!

Hiking

Hiking

Hiking is a good way to discover and enjoy the landscapes of the Algarve while enjoying a gentle sporting activity, where you can go at your own pace. Head out early in the morning and watch the sunrise from the rocky roads of the countryside. If you are interested in hiking in the Algarve, here are some addresses:

  • For a hike off the beaten track: mountains and waterfalls of the Serra de Monchique. You can enjoy a superb view of the sea and mountains to start your stay in the region.

  • For a breathtaking hike: the path of the 7 hanging valleys. It is not the distance that will surprise you, rather the landscapes offered by this wild 12-kilometre trail, easy to walk with the family. At 45 meters high, admire the cliffs overlooking the ocean and at the end of the route, enjoy the view of the superb Benagil cave.

  • A hike in the heart of the Algarve: Via Algarviana. This great pedestrian road offers sumptuous green natural landscapes, different from the beaches of the South. At the time, this 300 km long road was used by pilgrims of Spanish origin who wanted to go to Cape St. Vincent. Discover the traditional Algarve during this hike and meet the farmers and admire the small original houses.

Climbing

Climbing

In the Algarve, you will be in awe of the high and majestic mountains that carve out the landscape and protect the beaches, so why not consider climbing them? Climbing is a great way to practice a sporting activity, enjoy nature and experience thrills, so if this sport is your favourite, here are some of the perfect spots to climb in the Algarve:

In Sagres, Punta Baleeira is oriented South-East, avoid the months of July and August to venture there because of the strong presence of the sun. Also, avoid bringing young children for their safety. Climb on limestone which is an incredible 30 meters high and admire the Portuguese landscape from your cliff!

Rocha da Pena in Loulé offers between 50 and 100 climbing routes at 45 meters high for climbing enthusiasts. For this location, avoid the period from June to September, but try January-May or October-December and take advantage of the Algarve's wilderness to get some exercise!

Canoeing

Canoeing

Canoeing is one of the most enjoyable activities to do with the family. There is no age requirement to paddle between the waves and enjoy the sun reflecting on the ocean. Choose your favourite beach and take the family on a canoe trip when the ocean is calm and go discover the caves of the area by yourself. Why not relax on the warm sand for an afternoon?
